White Elephant Gift Exchange Rules
A white elephant gift exchange is a party game where everyone brings one wrapped gift, then takes turns opening a present or stealing an opened one. Unlike Secret Santa, nobody shops for an assigned recipient; Dirty Santa usually means the same swap game, with house rules deciding the stealing limits. Agree on a budget and draw numbers before anyone unwraps a gift. Everyone leaves with one present, whether your group chooses playful steals or a calmer version with no stealing.
How to play white elephant, step by step
Set a shared gift budget
Agree on a spending range and whether gifts should be useful, funny or themed.
Host tip: Put $20–$25 in the invitation and say whether tax counts toward the limit.
Bring one wrapped gift per person
Each player adds one wrapped gift to a shared pile, without a recipient name.
Host tip: Use similar bags or plain wrapping so price tags and fancy packaging do not give gifts away.
Draw numbers for the picking order
Give everyone a unique number from 1 to the number of players. Player 1 starts.
Host tip: Seat people in number order and keep the list visible to the host.
Open a gift or steal an opened one
Player 1 opens a wrapped gift. Each later player may open a new gift or take an eligible opened gift from someone else.
Host tip: Hold each opened gift up so everyone knows what is available.
Let the person who lost a gift choose next
Someone whose gift is stolen immediately opens a wrapped gift or steals another eligible gift. The numbered turn ends when a wrapped gift is opened; then the next number plays.
Host tip: Mark stolen gifts during each numbered turn, apply your chosen limits, and announce the ending before play starts.
Three white elephant rule variations
There is no single universal rulebook. Dirty Santa is often another name for white elephant; here, it labels our per-person steal-limit option. Pick one complete set before play. Group sizes and times below are planning estimates.
| Rule set | Suggested group | Estimated time |
|---|---|---|
| Classic white elephant | 6–20 players | 30–60 minutes |
| Dirty Santa: three steals per person | 8–25 players | 45–90 minutes |
| No-stealing gift exchange | 3–15 players | 10–25 minutes |
Classic white elephant
A lively swap with stealing. Smaller groups can play too; this is a comfortable planning range.
- If your gift is stolen, choose next. A gift can be stolen only once within a numbered turn; no immediate take-backs.
- A gift locks after its third steal during the game and stays with its holder.
- Opening a wrapped gift ends that numbered turn. Continue with the next number until the last wrapped gift is opened.
- Player 1 may then keep their gift or make one final swap with an unlocked gift. The other holder gets player 1's gift; no new stealing chain follows. The game is over.
Dirty Santa: three steals per person
Use the classic rules, plus a maximum of three steals initiated by each person across the whole game.
- Each person may initiate at most three steals in the entire game. The host keeps a tally next to each name.
- A gift can be stolen once per numbered turn and locks after its third steal overall. No immediate take-backs.
- If your gift is stolen, choose next. If you have used all three steals, open a wrapped gift. Opening a gift ends the numbered turn.
- After the last wrapped gift opens, player 1 may make one final swap with an unlocked gift only if they have a steal left. Count that swap toward their limit; the other holder gets player 1's gift. No further swaps.
No-stealing gift exchange
A calmer option for small groups, children or anyone who would rather keep the gift they open.
- Continue in number order, with each person choosing and opening one wrapped gift.
- Opened gifts stay with their new owners. There is no stealing or replacement turn.
- The last player opens the last wrapped gift. There is no extra turn or final swap for player 1.
- The game ends when everyone has one gift.
White elephant gift exchange themes
Choose a theme before anyone shops: funny gifts for a playful group, practical gifts people can use every day, or office-friendly gifts for a coworker exchange. For a budget theme, ask everyone to bring a gift under $25; combine that limit with any of these ideas and say whether tax counts toward the budget.

How it differs from Secret Santa and Dirty Santa
In white elephant, gifts go into a shared pile and people choose during the party. Dirty Santa commonly describes the same swap, with local rules about stealing. Secret Santa gives each person a recipient before shopping. For that kind of exchange, use our secret santa generator.

White elephant rules FAQ
How many times can the same gift be stolen?+
In our classic and Dirty Santa rules, a gift can be stolen once per numbered turn and three times across the whole game. After its third steal, it locks with the current holder. These are house rules, so announce them before opening gifts.
Who gets the last gift in a white elephant exchange?+
The person who opens the final wrapped gift keeps it unless it is involved in player 1's optional final swap. In our classic rules, that swap exchanges two gifts and ends the game without another stealing chain. In the no-stealing version, the last player simply keeps the last gift.
What is a good white elephant gift budget?+
A $20–$25 range is a practical starting point for this guide, not a required price. Agree on an amount everyone is comfortable spending, say whether tax is included, and send the budget before people shop.
Can you play white elephant with 3 people?+
Yes. Each of the three players brings one wrapped gift and draws a number. The no-stealing version is a simple choice for a small group. You can also allow stealing, but the exchange will be short and there will be fewer gifts to choose from.
Can you play white elephant with adults only?+
Yes. A white elephant gift exchange for adults uses the same picking and stealing rules. Agree on the budget and theme before shopping, and keep gifts appropriate for the group. Funny, practical or office-friendly gifts can all work; an adults-only guest list does not require adult-themed gifts.
Do white elephant gifts need to be wrapped?+
Yes, for the versions on this page. Keep gifts unmarked and wrapped until someone chooses them. Similar gift bags or plain paper help hide the contents; tell guests in advance if you are using a different reveal format.
Can a stolen gift be stolen back immediately?+
Not under our rules. The same gift cannot be stolen again during that numbered turn, so an immediate take-back is blocked. It becomes eligible on the next numbered turn unless it has already reached the three-steal lock.
Can you play a white elephant gift exchange online?+
Yes. Use a video call, a shared picking-order list and a host who tracks gifts and steals. Arrange delivery privately, and use concealed gift numbers or photos for the reveal. This page draws picking order only; it does not manage shipping or a remote gift pool.
What is the difference between white elephant, Dirty Santa and Secret Santa?+
White elephant and Dirty Santa are often names for the same shared-pile gift swap; stealing limits depend on the host. Our Dirty Santa option adds a three-steal limit per person. Secret Santa assigns each participant a recipient in advance, so people shop for that person's gift.
What happens when your gift is stolen?+
You choose next: open a wrapped gift or steal another eligible gift. You cannot immediately take back the same gift. In our Dirty Santa option, if you have already initiated three steals, you must open a wrapped gift. Then play returns to the next numbered player.
Does player 1 get a final turn?+
In our classic rules, player 1 gets one optional final swap with an unlocked gift after the last wrapped gift opens. It is a direct swap, not a new stealing chain. Our Dirty Santa version also requires a remaining steal; our no-stealing version has no final swap.
